Julia Geromini

Dreaming of Journalism

By Emily Jacobs

From a young age sophomore Julia Geromini knew she wanted to pursue a career in writing. With a love of writing and a strong interest in reporting, she was turned onto journalism.

“Since I was younger I knew I wanted t be in a career where I could write and express myself through writing,” Geromini said. “Journalism allows me to do that, and I think reporting the news and hearing other people’s stories is really interesting.”

Julia grew up in the Boston area and applied the University of Rhode Island as journalism major and public relations minor. When she arrived to URI she wasted no time learning about her future career.

She began writing for the URI school paper, The Cigar her freshman year, while also taking her first journalism courses.

“My favorite class would be either Journalism 221 [Multimedia Reporting] or Journalism 220 [Media Writing],” Geromini said. “This is because I enjoy the reporting aspect of it.”

While Geromini knows she wants a career in reporting she is unsure whether it will be print or broadcast. A desire to be in front of a camera interests Geromini, but she also knows her talent is in writing.

But Geromini also is pursuing public relation as her minor. That aspect of her study also interests her in a career writing for a big company, such as press releases.

“I am currently a journalism major and a public relations minor,” Geromini said. “So I could see myself working for a big company maybe writing news for them. I have a lot of different interests when it comes to journalism. Hopefully I can narrow it down while I’m in college.”

With such a strong passion for writing and reporting, Geromini has always been interested in watching different news broadcasts. When she watches reporting from ABC and NBC she explores her feelings toward broadcast journalism. But while she enjoys watching, she is also seeing what she says is her dream job.

“I really like ABC News, I think they are pretty fair reporting-wise,” Geromini said. “I think my dream job would be working for a big television station like NBC or CBS.”
